Financial Assistance & Web Links If you have recently become disabled and are now a wheelchair user or if have just been discharged from hospital in a physical condition completely different fom when you were admitted I hope this site will be of interest / helpful. Understandably your head and your life will be all over the place, and it will of course take time to get some form of normality back into both. I was admitted into hospital with all limbs intact, but was discharged having had both legs amputated, so to a certain degree I am aware of what you have been through, and what you might go through. I will endeavour on this site to list information and my findings / experiences that I think maybe useful to you. I am not going to discuss any health or medical issues simply because I am not a doctor, and it is up to you, your family etc.. and the medical team that treat you to worry about that. Individual’s severity of disability will of course differ, as will their financial status, employment status, marital status, ethnic / cultural status, religious status etc… As such everybody’s priority’s may differ, but I will run through what was and is important to me. Prior to being discharged my immediate concerns were my accomodation and my financial position, I had neither. Obviously finding accomodation is incredibly important, as is being able to pay for it. The fact I had no savings, no initial way of generating an income and was physically not able to work my financial state was of real concern. For me once I had organised some form of income through government assistance I felt a little more secure /ave me a little peace of mind, and could then concentrate on trying to get better. Everybody's circumstances are different: disability, marital status, employment status etc...but below is a list of certain benefits, government departments & websites that are worth considering / contacting - after all you have probably been paying National Insurance for X years! 1. Housing Benefit 2. Council Tax Benefit 3. Income Support 4. Incapacity Benefit 5. Disability Living Allowance!
